Ruth H. Hopkins (Cankudutawin- Red Road Woman) is Sisseton Wahpeton and Mdewakanton Dakota and Hunkpapa Lakota, of the Oceti Sakowin (Great Sioux Nation). She was born in Fort Yates, North Dakota on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation and is an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation.
Ruth is an award winning columnist for Indian Country Today, and co-founder of Lastrealindians.com. She is also a contributor for Teen Vogue, Bustle, The Guardian, Truthout.org, Jezebel.com, Racialicious.com, BKNation.org, and Counterpunch. Her work has been featured everywhere, including Gawker, the Associated Press, The Hollywood Reporter, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Star Magazine, MTV, and she’s been a regular on TMZ Live. Ruth is also a tribal attorney and judge as well as a biologist who specializes in ethnobotany and environmental science.
